South Cotabato 2nd District Representative Peter Miguel is facing strong criticism from his constituents after joining 215 out of 306 lawmakers who signed as complainants in the latest impeachment bid against Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
The impeachment complaint, the fourth attempt against Duterte, was initially expected to be filed in early January. However, the House leadership secured a one-third vote from its members, including Miguel, to bypass the usual committee process and directly transmit the case to the Senate for trial.
Miguel, who is seeking reelection in the 2nd District, has drawn backlash from many South Cotabateños, particularly Duterte supporters, who make up a significant portion of the electorate. In the 2022 elections, Vice President Duterte won by a landslide in South Cotabato’s 2nd District, securing 129,404 votes. Given this overwhelming support, Miguel’s decision to support the impeachment bid has been met with disappointment and anger from local voters, with many calling it a political miscalculation that could jeopardize his chances in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, 1st District Representative Ed Lumayag also signed the impeachment complaint, but analysts believe that while his decision may not sit well with some Duterte supporters, it will have a lesser impact on his reelection bid due to the lack of strong and well-known challengers in the 1st District race.
As of now, Miguel has yet to issue a statement addressing the controversy. Analysts believe his impeachment vote could play a major role in the 2025 elections, especially in South Cotabato’s 2nd District, where Duterte remains widely popular.
