2 Koronadal Students win in International English Competition

Jakarta, Indonesia - The Philippines bag the championship for the speech category in the 2011 Southeast Asian English Olympics. Ms. Irene Demavivas of St. Alexius College taking BS Radiologic Technology, was able to successfully emerge as the champion outdoing her Malaysian competitor Izzat Fauzi of the University Teknologi Petronas. The speech category was participated by around 40 participants and Ms. Irene was able to advance through each stage: Prepared Speech, Extemporaneous Speech, Humorous Speech, Tall Tales, Table Topics and the Finale Speech.

The reigning Ms. Green Valley College 2010 Ms. Mihojimil Kurogi, a 4th year high school student of the Green Valley College - High School for the Arts, was able to get into the semi-final round of the Newscasting Category and finished fifth among the 56 participants. Mihojimil was the only high school student in her category that was able to get into the elimination round (top 20), octo finals (top 10) and semi finals (top 5). She was able to successfully participate in the News reading, Showbiz reporting, Live Reporting (Reporter and Newscaster), and the Talkshow Hosting.

Another Filipino, Nazarene delos Santos from the University of Rizal System, also won in the competition as a semi-finalist, ranking 4th among the 35 participants in the Storytelling category.

The 2011 Southeast Asian English Olympics have been participated by 352 high school and college students from 4 countries -- Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. To date, this is the biggest english competition in Southeast Asia. It is organized by the Bina Nusantara English Club (BNEC), a student organization based in Binus University, one of the leading private institution in Jakarta. The competition ran from February 14 to 19, 2011.

Philippine Country Ambassador to the 2011 SEO, RJ Sustiguer, explains that "The competition provided the students a rare opportunity to showcase their skills and talents to other student nationalities. Now that we have observed what happened this year, we expect better performance of the Philippine team next year."

RJ Sustiguer and Mihojimil Kurogi got also had the chance to be interviewed in BinusTV, and local Jakarta news paper.
