In 2017, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of General Santos City, approved a resolution that puts back the exact date of the GenSan charter anniversary as June 15 instead of September 5, the date that residents used to celebrate it.
According to the resolution, the GenSan charter under Republic Act 5412 was approved on June 15, 1968 during the time of then-President Ferdinand Marcos and so the city should mark it on this date.
In the past, the anniversary was marked on September 5 when it was highlighted by the annual celebration of the week-long Tuna Festival.
