In South Cotabato, the ongoing efforts to address the grievances and struggles of some of our fellow citizens have yielded positive results, as 11 former rebels (FRs) from Barangay Miasong, Tupi, decided to surrender and return to the fold of the government.
The surrenderees were presented to South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. at the Provincial Capitol in Koronadal City, Tuesday, August 13, 2024. The presentation was led by Brigadier General Andre B. Santos, Commander of the 1st Mechanized Infantry (Maaasahan) Brigade, in collaboration with the 5th Special Forces Battalion and the Provincial Social Worker and Development Office (PSWDO) headed by Ms. Sonia L. Bautista, RSW, MTRM, MPA, who is also the head secretariat of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) in South Cotabato.
In addition to the surrender of the former rebels, Brigadier General Santos presented eight (8) military-grade high-powered firearms, including 7.62mm M14 rifles, that were turned over by the FRs. He emphasized the importance of removing these dangerous weapons from circulation to ensure the safety and security of the local communities.
Governor Tamayo expressed his gratitude to the former rebels for choosing to abandon their former lives of conflict and rejoin the community. He assured them of the government’s full support in helping them reintegrate into society and live peaceful, productive lives.
The governor also urged the former rebels to encourage others who are still in hiding to surrender, reaffirming that his administration is always open to those who wish to lay down their arms and reintegrate into society.
Brigadier General Santos noted that these former rebels were remnants of the dismantled Guerilla Front Alip and supporters of remaining insurgent elements. Recognizing that continued conflict was no longer viable, they chose to lay down their arms and seek a life free from violence and threats.
Governor Tamayo extended his deep appreciation to the military forces, especially Brigadier General Santos and the 5th Special Forces Battalion, for their relentless efforts to maintain peace and order in South Cotabato. Their dedication has been critical in creating an environment where former rebels feel safe to return and start anew.
This surrender is a testament to the success of South Cotabato's continuous efforts to address the root causes of insurgency and foster peace and development in the region.
