Governor Tamayo on Mrs. Miguel’s Gubernatorial Bid: ‘It’s Not About Winning’

South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. has openly stated that the candidacy of April Rose Espinosa-Miguel, wife of 2nd District Congressman Peter B. Miguel, is not primarily aimed at winning the 2025 gubernatorial race. Tamayo, while respecting the couple’s decision, believes the run may have deeper motives.

"In my view, that’s not the main goal," Governor Tamayo said, referring to Mrs. Miguel’s candidacy. "I still believe there’s something Congressman Miguel needs to justify. By letting his wife run, the aim is not to win, but simply to justify something. And we all know she hasn’t made any public appearances."

Governor Tamayo speculated that Mrs. Miguel’s candidacy may be more about fulfilling a prior agreement or commitment rather than a serious bid for the governorship. He suggested that Congressman Miguel fielded his wife to ensure there would be an opponent in the gubernatorial race.

"Maybe they had a commitment that someone needed to run," Tamayo explained. "The problem is, there was no one else available, so he let his wife run just to justify that there would be a candidate for governor."

Despite being surprised by the candidacy, Governor Tamayo acknowledged that it is their right to enter the race. "It’s their right to run for governor, and that’s their decision. I was just surprised because, of course, she’s a plain housewife. But perhaps now, she wants to be involved in public service," he added.

As he seeks his final term, Governor Tamayo emphasized that his focus remains on delivering quality service to the people of South Cotabato. "Regardless of the circumstances, my commitment is to continue providing the right and proper service to our people," he assured.

Mrs. Miguel’s candidacy came as a surprise to the public when she filed her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) just minutes before the October 8, 2024, deadline.
