Gov. Tamayo seals P1.2B "Waste-to-Energy" Project for a greener South Cotabato

South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr. on Monday, February 24, 2025, led the signing of a P1.2 billion tripartite agreement for a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Project in collaboration with the Municipality of Surallah and Alterna Verde Corporation.

This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind not only in the region but in the entire country, will transform organic waste into a renewable energy source, providing a long-term solution to waste management challenges, generating economic opportunities, and significantly reducing electricity costs in the province.

“This project will greatly enhance our waste management system, create sustainable revenue streams for the province, and help lower power expenses for our communities,” Governor Tamayo emphasized during the signing ceremony.

As a first-of-its-kind initiative in Surallah, this project is set to benefit the third district municipalities of Tboli, Lake Sebu, Sto. Niño, Norala, Surallah, and Banga. It provides a sustainable alternative to landfill expansion, addressing the limited availability of land for waste disposal while promoting an environmentally responsible approach to waste management.
Cutting-Edge Green Technology

The project will utilize Sustainable Environmental Resource Genesis System (SERGS) technology, which efficiently converts organic waste into clean biogas, a renewable energy source, and organic fertilizer to support sustainable agriculture. This innovative system will not only reduce landfill dependency but also contribute to environmental conservation and agricultural productivity.
Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships

Also present during the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing were Mr. Nervy C. Santiago, CEO and General Manager of Alterna Verde Corporation; Hon. Alan M. Ines, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member; Hon. Leovi Andrei E. Mendoza, Vice President for Marketing; Engr. Roldan Eusoya; Mr. Tyron Jann B. Villanueva, RN, MPA, Development Management IV; and Seigfred Flaviano of the Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO).

The signing, held at the South Cotabato Provincial Capitol, highlights the province’s commitment to sustainable environmental programs, economic growth, and renewable energy initiatives.

The Waste-to-Energy Project is expected to set a new benchmark for local government units nationwide, further solidifying South Cotabato’s reputation as a model for sustainable development and innovative environmental management. This initiative aligns with Governor Tamayo’s vision of “Tama at Maayos na Serbisyo”, ensuring that progress and innovation continue to benefit the people of South Cotabato.
