Motorists and residents have raised alarm over the ongoing asphalting project along the National Highway near Tupi Fruit Park, describing it as “dangerous” due to its uneven surface and potholes.
A viral Facebook post called on DPWH South Cotabato to immediately check the stretch of road, warning that it poses serious risks especially to motorcycle riders. “It’s exhausting to keep avoiding the potholes on this road,” the netizen wrote.
The post drew widespread concern, with several residents recounting near-accidents. One said he almost crashed while driving through thick fog in the early morning: “My motorcycle slipped after falling into one of the asphalt pits. Luckily, we were driving slowly. This must be fixed before a real tragedy happens.” Another added: “This is very dangerous. Several vehicles have already figured in accidents here because of the bumpy asphalt… It’s causing too much inconvenience.”
The issue caught the attention of South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr., who identified the contractor as Gemma Construction, linked to former Congressman Peter Miguel. More importantly, Tamayo revealed that he has been calling on the DPWH for the past two months to repair the project, but no action has been taken.
“For two months already I've been calling out DPWH to repair it asap,” Tamayo said.
Residents and motorists are now echoing the governor’s appeal, urging DPWH to act swiftly before more accidents occur on this vital stretch of the national highway.
