Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. met with executives and officials of Dole Philippines, Inc. (Dolefil) this morning, September 14 to air serious concerns affecting South Cotabateños, giving the multinational company two weeks to take corrective action.
Tamayo raised alarm over Dolefil’s recent practice of employing workers - including security personnel—from outside the province. He said this policy not only denies South Cotabateños of employment opportunities but also creates a potential threat to the safety and harmony of local communities.
The governor’s concern was further fueled by a recent incident in which Dolefil security guards allegedly shot a minor accused of stealing two pineapples.
“Just because of two pineapples, you will shoot a South Cotabateño? That is unacceptable,” Tamayo stressed.
In his dialogue with company executives, Governor Tamayo also called for:
-
Prioritizing local hiring, especially in plantation and security work, to strengthen trust and protect communities.
-
Better engagement with host communities by offering livelihood and development programs.
-
Closer coordination with LGUs to ensure operations align with local welfare.
-
Relocating Dolefil’s main office to South Cotabato so that the province benefits from tax revenues currently paid in Makati.
The governor reminded Dolefil that South Cotabato welcomes investors but expects fair returns for its people.
“Ang importante sa akin, yung kapakanan ng tao ko. We invite investors not only to generate income, but to create jobs and economic activities for South Cotabateños. If you cannot give those benefits, then why invest here?”
He added:
“Give what is due to our province. We have been your longtime partners, but if you do not consider us, then we will let you go.”
Governor Tamayo assured that the provincial government is ready to work with Dolefil, provided that the company takes concrete steps to strengthen its partnership with South Cotabato and its people.
