Governor Tamayo Champions Stronger LGU–Mining Collaboration for Responsible Development

South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Sucayan Tamayo Jr. has called for stronger collaboration between local government units (LGUs) and the mining industry to promote responsible and inclusive development during the Mining Philippines 2025: International Conference and Exhibition held at the Grand Hyatt Manila on Wednesday.

Speaking before delegates from government, business, and civil society, Governor Tamayo emphasized that partnerships between LGUs and mining companies play a crucial role in ensuring that mining activities deliver real benefits to local communities.

“In strengthening local government relations in mining, I believe the path ahead lies in three key priorities,” Tamayo said. “First, empower local governments as genuine partners in the mining value chain, not just implementers. Second, build trust and transparency among industry, government, and communities through open data, consultations, and joint monitoring. And third, invest in the capacity building of LGUs to ensure that technical decisions are always grounded in science and evidence.”

The governor also highlighted his administration’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with the mining sector in South Cotabato to achieve both economic growth and social equity.

“If we can do these, mining can truly become a model of responsible development — one that uplifts people, protects our environment, and strengthens trust in governance,” he added.

Tamayo, who also serves as National President of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), underscored that progress should not only be measured by economic gains but also by the positive and lasting impact on people’s lives.

“In South Cotabato, we continue to learn every day that true progress is not measured by how much we extract from the ground but by how much we leave behind in the lives of our people — a testament to our motto, ‘South Cotabato, Angat ka sa Lahat!’”

The Mining Philippines 2025 Conference gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and local officials to discuss strategies for strengthening responsible mining practices and ensuring that the country’s natural resources contribute to sustainable national and local development.
