Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. expressed his deep appreciation for the tourism sector's pivotal role in revitalizing the country’s economy post-pandemic, during his remarks at the 2024 Pearl Awards, one of the highlights of the 25th Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) National Convention held on October 10, 2024.
Addressing over 1,000 tourism officers from across the country, Governor Tamayo shared his pride in South Cotabato being chosen as the host for this prestigious event, underscoring the vital contributions of tourism officers to local and national development.
"It is my great honor, as Governor of South Cotabato, that you have chosen our province as the venue for the 2024 Pearl Awards and the 25th ATOP Convention. We are truly delighted by your visit," said Tamayo, expressing his gratitude to the attendees.
Governor Tamayo emphasized the significant role tourism plays in boosting local economies, acknowledging the hard work of the tourism officers who contribute to this success.
"One of the most important sectors that drive our economic growth is tourism, and that is thanks to all of you, our dedicated tourism officers," he continued.
He further highlighted that after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the tourism sector that first sparked the revival of the economy, both locally and nationally.
"After the pandemic, the first sector to breathe life back into our economy was tourism. That’s why I extend my deepest gratitude to all of you," he remarked.
As the National Chairman of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), Governor Tamayo took pride in recognizing the significant contributions of the Department of Tourism and tourism officers nationwide in sustaining economic growth.
"We, as local chief executives, and in my role as the National Chairman of ULAP, are proud of the Department of Tourism and our tourism officers for your immense contribution to our economy. You are the ones who keep our local economies alive, especially in our respective LGUs," Tamayo stated.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of tourism offices in every local government unit (LGU), calling them some of the most essential players in each community’s success.
"Tourism offices are among the most important individuals in every LGU," he declared, recognizing their invaluable role in driving tourism initiatives and fostering economic development in various localities.
The 2024 Pearl Awards and the 25th ATOP National Convention were a resounding success, further solidifying the importance of tourism in shaping the country’s economic future. Governor Tamayo’s remarks served as a powerful tribute to the hard work and dedication of tourism officers nationwide.
