Me'dal Kolon Datal's performance at the 5th Sabah International Folklore Festival 2010

Background of Medal Kolon

Me'dal Kolon Datal (from B'laan origin - me'dal, meaning dance; and kolon datal, meaning wide cogonal plain, where the city's name is derived from) Dance and Theatre Ensemble (MKD - DTE) was organized on July 16, 2000.

It's creation was an answer to the challenge of Former Vice Governor Eliordo U. Ogena who felt the need to fill the vacuum left by the defunct South Cotabato Music Festival. Composed of sixteen original members, MKD-DTE first performance was a premiere production of "Sutlang Gubat" a three act dance drama based on the 1996 Lake Maughan tragedy written and directed by MKD-DTE's Artistic Director, Butch L. Ferrer. The staging of " Sutlang Gubat" became the opening salvo of the T'nalak Festival.

The original members were alumni of the Koronadal National Comprehensive High School D'Murayaw Dance Troupe who had the passion for dance and performance in search for a right venue to express and perpetuate it. From the measly 60,000Php production budget prepared by the province of South Cotabato , the production was successful that it inspired the members to formally organize a community-based dance group, hence the birth of MKD-DTE.

The dance troupe lived in hiatus for two years, accepting invitations to perform for free in various corporate, government and non-government agencies, schools and civic organizations' shows. It commissioned the group as its flag bearer in the "Kasadyahan sa Kapatagan" competition in the T'nalak Festival of the same year where it won a trophy for the city.
