LOOK: Hundreds of police join Via Crucis

Tambler, General Santos City – Lent is a season when all Christian Filipinos remember Christ’s Passion (his suffering, death and resurrection). To commemorate Jesus’ last week on earth, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 12, spearheaded by PBGEN ELISEO TAM RASCO, RD through the Regional Chaplain, conducts a Holy Week Celebration in which different activities will be performed and conducted at St Michael the Archangel Chapel, Tambler, General Santos City and Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, Camp Fermin G Lira, General Santos City.

This endeavour is aligned with the PNP Core Value – Makadiyos in support with the PNP’s Spiritual Upliftment Program which aims to boost the morale of the PNP Personnel in their approach to law enforcement.

The celebration started with the Lenten Recollection 2019, a 2-day spiritual enrichment activity with the theme: “Repentance a pathway to forgiveness” on April 12-13, 2019 at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Polomolok, South Cotabato. The activity was supported by RCADD & RCHAP.

It was followed by the Palm Sunday or Blessing of the Palms which is the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem days before he was crucified. It took place on April 14, 2019 at St Michael Chapel, General Santos City and Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel.

The Holy Wednesday was celebrated on April 17, 2019, wherein a Blue Mass took place at 8 am at St Michael Chapel, Tambler General Santos City and Via Crucis at 3 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, GSCPO.

On the following day, April 18, 2019 at 5 pm, a Holy Mass was celebrated for Holy Thursday at St Michael Chapel, Tambler, General Santos City followed by Holy Hour (Vigil) at 6 pm to 8 pm. At 6 pm, an Evening Mass was held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, GSCPO followed by Holy Hour (Vigil) at 8 pm to 10 pm.

The highlight of the Holy Week Celebration is the Via Crucis or Way of the Cross on Good Friday, April 19, 2019. The procession was led by none other than the Regional Director of PRO 12, PBGEN ELISEO TAM RASCO, as one of the cross bearers. There are 14 devotions or stations, focus on specific events of Christ’s last day, beginning with His condemnation. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. The procession routed from General Santos City Airport to PRO 12 Chapel (St Michael Chapel, Tambler, General Santos City).

The 7 Last Words or Siete Palabras, a Church devotion in which devotees are invited to recall and meditate on Jesus' last words as he hung on the cross, was conducted still on Good Friday following the Via Crucis at 12 noon at Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, GSCPO. It was succeeded by the Passion of Christ/Liturgy of the Word and Veneration of the Cross, 4 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, GSCPO and 5 pm at St Michael Chapel, Tambler, General Santos City (except Passion of Christ).

Tomorrow, April 20, 2019, the Black Saturday or Sabado de Gloria will be celebrated to commemorate the one full day that Jesus Christ's body laid in the tomb for which a mass will be held for the Blessing of Fire at 6 pm both at St Michael Chapel, Tambler GSC and Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel, GSCPO

The last activity of the Holy Week Celebration will be the Easter Sunday, the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead, on April 21, 2019 wherein a Salubong sa Kampo Lira took place at 4 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus, GSCPO and a Holy mass at 7:30 am at St Michael Chapel, Tambler, GSC.

Hopefully the PRO 12’s Holy Week Celebration 2019 will end successfully and the remaining activities will still be safe and secured. Other than uniformed personnel, all Christians are still highly encouraged to participate in the last two Holy Days, the Sabado de Gloria and Easter Sunday. (Pat Bazel Jacquelei E Banico)
