Cong. Acharon files bill to give GenSan a separate legislative district

Congressman Pedro Acharon Jr. of the 1st District of South Cotabato has again filed a bill which seeks to establish a separate congressional or legislative district for the City of General Santos.

House Bill 4678 filed by Acharon on December 13, 2016 and was then referred to the House committee on local government the following day suggests the creation of a lone legislative district for the City of General Santos and reconfiguration of the present composition of South Cotabato’s first and second congressional districts.

At present, General Santos City which has a population of more than 594,000 according to the 2015 census, is part of the 1st district of South Cotabato with the towns of Polomolok, Tupi and Tampakan while the 2nd district is composed of the City of Koronadal and the municipalities of Tantangan, Banga, Tboli, Surallah, Sto.Nino, Norala, and Lake Sebu.

With the proposed creation of a separate legislative district for General Santos City, the first district of South Cotabato will have the remaining towns of Polomolok, Tupi and Tampakan. The three towns are also qualified for a separate legislative district with a combined population of more than 260,000.

Based on the 2015 census, Polomolok has a population of at least 152,789, Tupi has 69,976 while Tampakan has 39,525.
