The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of South Cotabato has handed down a six-month suspension to Tboli Mayor Deo Dayle Tuan, Vice Mayor Ronnie Dela Peña, and two municipal councilors following their conviction for dishonesty and grave abuse of authority.
The SP's decision imposes a 90-day suspension for dishonesty and an additional 90 days for grave abuse of authority, totaling 180 days of suspension for the officials.
Councilors Pacifico Cordada Jr., Valerio J. Fado, Gading Kambalan, and Samuel T. Haus were also found guilty of grave abuse of authority and received a 60-day suspension, though they were acquitted on charges of dishonesty.
Councilors Falin Q. Kuta and Romeo Sugan were likewise suspended for 90 days for grave abuse of authority but were cleared of dishonesty charges.
The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by Evelyn Montil, who accused the officials of conspiring to grant tax exemptions to the Crown Jewel Hotel, a business owned by the Tuan family.
Montil expressed her gratitude for the SP's ruling, stating it was a long-awaited victory for her and the people of Tboli. "This decision brings justice to our community and ensures accountability from our leaders," she said.
The suspension marks a significant move towards restoring public trust in Tboli's local government and highlights the importance of integrity and accountability in public office.
