South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. has pledged his support for the City of Koronadal’s plan to establish its own City Hospital, emphasizing collaboration with Koronadal City Mayor Eliordo Ogena to make the project a reality.
Governor Tamayo revealed that the city is currently searching for a suitable site for the hospital, considering proper zoning requirements. "Tutulong tayo. Pag makahanap na sila ng lupang pagtatayuan ng hospital, sa ngayon naghahanap na sila ng tamang zoning na para pagtatayuan ng hospital," he stated.
He highlighted the importance of the project particularly in easing the congestion at the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital, which is also located in Koronadal City.
The governor suggested starting with an infirmary to expedite healthcare services for Koronadal residents. "Magtutulungan kami ni Mayor Ogena para makapagpatayo ang City of Koronadal ng sarili nilang city hospital. Kahit infirmary lang muna."
Governor Tamayo acknowledged the pressing need for a city hospital to address the growing demand for healthcare services, which has led to overcrowding at the provincial hospital. "With a city hospital in Koronadal, we can significantly decongest the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital, allowing it to focus on providing specialized care while the city hospital caters to primary and secondary healthcare needs," he explained.
The governor further assured that he would utilize his connections at the national level to secure funding for the project. "May boses pa naman tayo sa national government. Kahit papaano makakakuha pa rin tayo ng pondo para sa ating proyekto," he stated, adding that he could obtain ₱200 to ₱300 million to jumpstart the hospital construction.
In a pointed remark, Governor Tamayo also expressed his disappointment with South Cotabato 2nd District Representative Peter Miguel, Vice Chairperson of the House Committee on Health and a medical doctor, for not initiating plans for a city hospital, even during his nine years as Koronadal City Mayor.
"As governor, ako nalang ang maghahanap ng paraan para maka-access ng pondo mula sa national government para makatulong sa pagpapatayo ng city hospital para sa Koronadal," Governor Tamayo asserted.
The governor concluded with a firm commitment to the project: "Pag ako nagsabi—tinitiyak talaga natin na mangyayari at gagawan natin ng paraan."
Once completed, the Koronadal City Hospital is expected to enhance access to healthcare for city residents while significantly alleviating the strain on the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital.
