South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. reaffirmed the urgent need for a city hospital in Koronadal to help decongest the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital (SCPH), which currently operates beyond capacity.
In a press conference, Governor Tamayo said that Koronadal City Mayor Eliordo Ogena visited his office last Friday, February 14 to discuss the proposed hospital project, among others. According to Mayor Ogena, a generous donor has already pledged a one-hectare lot for the construction of the facility.
“Napakaswerte ng mga taga-Koronadal dahil merong mga tao na naniniwala na kailangan i-give up ang ilang property nila to make sure na magkakaroon ng City Hospital ang Koronadal,” said Governor Tamayo, expressing gratitude for the donation.
The governor also refuted claims made by Congressman Peter Miguel, who reportedly stated that a city hospital in Koronadal is not feasible due to the existence of the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital.
“Mali po yung sinasabi ng ating Cong. Peter Miguel na hindi pwedeng magtayo ng City Hospital sa Koronadal dahil meron nang Provincial Hospital. Mali siguro yung kanilang research,” Tamayo said.
Governor Tamayo stressed the importance of constructing at least an infirmary-level hospital in Koronadal to alleviate the strain on SCPH, which was originally designed to accommodate only 200 patients but currently serves around 400 daily. Many of these patients come from Koronadal, highlighting the need for a dedicated city hospital to handle local cases more efficiently.
The governor cited the municipality of Polomolok as an example, where two government-run hospitals successfully operate—the Polomolok District Hospital managed by the Provincial Government and the Polomolok General Hospital run by the municipal government proving that multiple government-run healthcare facilities can coexist to better serve the public.
Furthermore, the governor highlighted the importance of a well-structured referral system for hospitals within the province to ensure a more efficient allocation of healthcare resources.
“Dapat talagang mapag-aralan ang referral system para ma-decongest yung mga malalaking hospital natin kagaya ng Provincial Hospital upang ma-maximize ang mga equipment at facilities na meron tayo,” he added.
Governor Tamayo remains committed to working with local leaders and stakeholders to ensure the successful establishment of the Koronadal City Hospital, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to providing accessible and quality healthcare for all South Cotabateños.
