South Cotabateños are all set to join this year's Earth Hour campaign against climate change on March 31, 2012.

The city government of Koronadal lined up initiatives in observance of the Earth Hour 2012 celebration. To include is a symposium at the new Koronadal City hall in the morning of March 31, an "Earth Hour Bike Challenge" and "Earth Hour 2012 Night Walk" which will be then followed by the traditional putting off of lights in major establishments in the city at exactly 8:30 in the evening. Below is the program for the Earth Hour 2012 celebration in the City of Koronadal.

Aside from the City of Koronadal, the city government of General Santos and the other 10 municipalities of South Cotabato will join the observance of Earth Hour 2012.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in just three years it has grown to be the largest voluntary mass-action event in human history, uniting billion of people worldwide. According to reports Philippines was ranked first in 2009, 2010, and 2011 in terms of Earth Hour participation.

Sharing here the video of the performance of the kids from Lamba Central Elementary School of Brgy.Lamba, Banga, South Cotabato in the recently concluded National Cheerleading Championship (NCC) held at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City last March 17, 2012.

Lamba Central ES Chipettes was declared CHAMPION in the Peewee Category. Watch and enjoy the video.



Other schools from South Cotabato which qualified in this year's finals of the National Cheerleading Championship (NCC) were the Banga National High School ( finished rank 7) and the Lake Sebu National High School (rank 12) in the High School Category. Meanwhile, teams from General Santos City the Sarimanok Pep Squad of NDDU finished at rank #4, the General Santos Foundation College, Inc. at rank 19 in the College Coed Category, and NDDU-IBED was rank 13th  in the high school category.

Here are suggestions for where to go and things to do when in South Cotabato.

1. Dole Plantations and Mt. Matutum- situated at the base of South Cotabato’s most imposing landmark - the majestic Mt. Matutum, the pineapple plantations of multinational company DOLE Philippines  spans around 12,000 hectares, the largest pineapple plantation in the country. Located somewhere at the  center of the vast pineapple plantation is an exclusive residential village with a 9-hole golf course and Dole Kalsangi Clubhouse, which serves  one of the best steak in South Cotabato.

2. There are Tarsiers in South Cotabato. With the establishment of a Tarsier Sanctuary, a closer look at the world’s smallest primate known locally as Tukal mal awaits you in Brgy. Linan, Tupi.

3. Strike a pose at the new Surallah Rotunda. A cultural landmark so uniquely attractive that tourists going to and  coming from Lake Sebu stop by to take a close look, it’s the newest attraction in South Cotabato. Unveiled last March 2011, the whole masterpiece  was designed by Kublai Ponce Millan.

4. Don’t miss a trip to Lake Sebu, the summer capital of the south and try the different dishes of Tilapia at some of the famous resorts like Punta Isla or Estaris Lake Resort.  Boating around the lake is also a must-try.

5. When you’re in Lake Sebu and South Cotabato you should not miss the gravity-defying Seven Falls Zipline experience. Literally FLY above three of the seven falls of Lake Sebu in just a ride at a speed of 100-120 kph and at a height of 180 meters high, the highest in Southeast Asia!

6. Visit Lang Dulay at T’bong in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. Get to know about the works and life story of a living legend among the T’boli's and one of the country’s “Living Treasures”, known for her dream-inspired weaving  of the famous  T’nalak. At 90 years old, Lang Dulay still weaves and uses the traditional process to create the T’nalak cloth. She was honored as National Artist last 1998.

7. Beat the heat at the world-class Paraiso Verde Resort and Water Park right in the heart of Koronadal City. Paraiso Verde Resort and Water Park opened its doors to the public last July 2011 and boasts of its Mobi Wave Pool, the first of its kind in Southern Philippines and 3 other types of pool.

8. Try to walk on water with Water Zorbing at Cresta Del Rio Splash Resort, the latest extreme aqua adventure is now in South Cotabato. Read more about water zorbing by clicking here.

9. Visit the South Cotabato Community Museum. If you want to know more about the history of the province of South Cotabato, its rich heritage, a tour to the South Cotabato Community Museum located at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center building is well worth a visit.

10. Celebrate with the locals at the annual T’nalak Festival. Usually set every second week of July, the T’nalak  Festival shows the rich and colorful cultural heritage of South Cotabato and its people. The festivity is named after the famous T’nalak  cloth woven by the T’boli’s of South Cotabato.  Some of the highlights of the festivity includes the T’nalak street dancing competition participated by the 10 municipalities of South Cotabato, the search for Mutya ng South Cotabato, Balikbayan Night, nightly concerts and more..

Today, March 18, 2012 is the opening of CRAA Meet 2012 at the South Cotabato Sports Complex. CRAA (Cotabato Regional Athletic Association) Meet is the biggest annual sporting event in the region composed of the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani Province, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato and the cities of Koronadal, General Santos, Tacurong and Cotabato City.
The South Cotabato Sports Complex is once again the venue of most of the major events for CRAA Meet. 
More than 4,000 athletes will once again compete in different sporting events in athletics, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics (women’s artistic gymnastics, men’s artistic gymnastic, and rhythmic gymnastics), sipa takraw, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball. 

Athletes who will stand out from CRAA Meet 2012 will have the chance to represent Region 12 in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa 2012 which will be held in the Province of Pangasinan on May 6-12, 2012.

The CRAA Meet is now on it's 10th year, last year it was also held in the City of Koronadal wherein the delegation from the Province of South Cotabato was declared as over-all champion. We are posting below the past venues of the CRAA Meet.
