Kafe' Balos, The World's Most Expensive Coffee

Just a few days ago, South Cotabato News had a chance to visit for the second time Purok 8, Brgy. Kinilis in Polomolok, South Cotabato, where one of the world's most expensive coffee came from- the Kafe' Balos.

We learned from the villagers that Kafe Balos comes from an unusual source- the droppings of palm civet (a nocturnal, cat-like mammal) or "balos" to the B'laan villagers. Droppings are handpicked and collected early in the morning by the villagers and then processed to become- Kafe Balos or Coffee Alamid .

This civet are known to have the taste of only the sweetest red coffee cherries that contains the coffee beans. When eaten by civets, the beans then pass through a natural processing or fermentation inside the civet's stomach which is believed to give the coffee its unique taste and aroma.

In the Philippines, the 70 grams of Kafe' Balos costs Php 500.00, and abroad it is sold at around $700.00 per kilo making it one of the world's most expensive coffee.

Watch the following video of TV Patrol Soccsksargen uploaded on Youtube featuring the Kafe' Balos of Kinilis.

  18. I heard Civet Coffee is a lot healthier since the beans get the nutrients in the tummy of a civet while it is being digested.

  19. I would certainly try this Civet coffee! Good thing our local farmers had started the production of this in demand and expensive coffee.

  22. Done two or three articles about the World's most expensive coffee and, indeed our very own Balos stand as one of the best. But I am not quite sure if at this moment, it still holds the world's record for the most expensive one

  25. dropping of a civet, now I am curious to taste that coffee. it must be really good.

  26. i know that tasting civet coffee is so exotic for others , only i oppose to some procedure that they capture the civet and force feed them with coffee beans which is a violation of Wild life Act in the Philippines. and so i suggest that before buying this be sure that the production came from a natural process where droppings are taken from the wild and not from the cages .

  27. its look like this is a great taste coffee!

  28. It is great to know how nature works :) The natural process looks like a bit yucky but the end result is one awesome coffee product. I hope Philippines can sustain this ~ http://www.theurbanwalker.net/
